Jazz legend to play Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol
Jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington is to play a four-date UK tour this June. Washington and his ten-piece band, The Next Step, will take in Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol from 27–30 Jun 2016.
Introduced to the saxophone at the age of 13, Washington went on to perform throughout his childhood and high school days, before – while in his second year studying ethnomusicology at UCLA – touring with Snoop Dogg and, later the same year, joining the orchestra of his hero Gerald Wilson, and touring internationally with R&B legend Raphael Saadiq. Ever since, Washington has performed with the likes of McCoy Tyner, Freddie Hubbard, Kenny Burrell, Lauryn Hill, Mos Def, Quincy Jones, Stanley Clark and Chaka Khan. As well as this, Washington is a member of musical collective West Coast Get Down.
This UK tour comes after Washington worked with Kendrick Lamar on his groundbreaking To Pimp a Butterfly, and the release of his own solo album The Epic in May 2015. The Epic is a triple-disc testament to Washington's prowess, and it hit the number one spot on the US, Canadian, Australian, Russian and British iTune Jazz charts.
