Comic's fifth tour, 'What is This?', to hit 28 venues through Sep–Nov
Off the back of a series of successful international dates, Simon Amstell has announced his fifth UK stand-up tour. Taking place from September to November, the comic's latest is a massive run of dates taking him all over the UK. As well as book-ending the tour at London's Leicester Square Theatre and Shepherd's Bush Empire respectively, he's also stopping off at 28 other venues across England and Ireland.
Amstell is best known for being the uber acerbic host of Popworld, notorious for often pushing the line as far as possible – occasionally too far (rumours run rampant that he once made Britney Spears cry during an interview). He had a successful run as the host of Never Mind the Buzzcocks from 2006-2008 where his presenting style remained just as sharp (anyone remember when Preston walked off in protest?).
A more mature – but no less funny – side of Amstell came to the fore in Grandma's House, which he directed and starred in: a poignant, funny sitcom about Jewish family life, starring Linda Bassett and Rebecca Front.
More recently, he has been focusing on his stand up career in a succession of critically-acclaimed tours that really show off his self-deprecating humour. Unafraid to delve into the deeply personal, he routinely takes on topics such as love, sexuality and is-he-serious self-hatred.
