Botanical Gardens

St Andrews has had a Botanic Garden since 1889, but the present one dates back to 1960. There are several glasshouses and gardens devoted to specific types of plants, and as of April 2015 the garden has a Gruffalo trail, with wooden carvings of characters from the children's book lurking amid the shrubbery.

St Andrews Botanic Garden is a beautiful living treasure in the heart of historic St Andrews, home to 8,000 species of plant representing biomes from around the world. Mature tree and shrub plantings enclose the garden and inspirational plant displays cover rock and scree hillsides, ponds, woodland and herbaceous borders. For families, there is a natural play area and seasonal activity trails. Recently added is the Tangled Bank, which showcases the very best of North East Fife plant life. Incorporating sand dunes, meadows, glades, meandering grass paths and a boardwalk, the Tangled Bank is a beautiful space to spend time.
