Just off the Royal Mile in a courtyard paved with inscriptions from some of Scotland’s literary greats, the museum is dedicated to three of Scotland’s finest writers – Robert Louis Stevenson, Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott – and includes a rich collection of manuscripts, first editions and portraits, as well as artefacts such as Burns' writing desk, Scott's childhood rocking horse and Stevenson's fishing rod. This free museum is easy to locate just off the Lawnmarket, in Lady Stair’s Close and very popular among tourists. With a wide range of stories and objects this museum has something for everyone to enjoy, whether young or old, local resident or visitor. You don’t need to have read these writers’ works to enjoy the fascinating life stories told in the Writers’ Museum.
